Meet Willa’s new friend, Spike

While ‘Crow and I were shopping for an “ant-proof” dish for Dweez we spied a cute little ball of fluff peering at us from inside one of the adoption crates. After talking to the woman running the adoption we learned Spike was having a hard time being placed due to his age. He’s a healthy little dog with a good many years ahead of him…there is no reason why his age should keep someone from giving the little guy a good permanent home. My heart went out to him (Crow and I are both such suckers when it comes to homeless/hurt animals) and after a bit of discussion ‘Crow and I decided to make him part of our family. We had been contemplating bringing home a friend for Willa (I feel bad leaving her home alone while I’m at work) but we don’t have the time to raise another puppy. According to the woman, Spike loves to be around other animals…even cats (he’s groomed Dweez already ;-p). This was the ’selling point’ - a dog in need with the right personality to fit in with our menagerie. The cellphone picture below isn’t very clear, but he’s quite fluffy for a Chihuahua. ‘Crow was brushing Spike’s fur to remove the loose hairs (most of which have already stuck to my shirt/skirt/car/etc ;-p). Spike has a pretty interesting look - aside from his cool markings he has a large ruff of hair around his neck and fairly fluffy cheeks (brushed back in the photo). The little guy gets his unique - and quite adorable - looks due to being a ‘hybrid’ (<--not overly fond of that term) of a Corgi and Chihuahua. At 7 pounds he's the light-weight of our animal family...even smaller than the rat running around our yard (loooong story). He has the sweetest disposition and has already adopted us as his pack (he doesn't like it when one of us leaves the room for very long ;-p). Dweez finds him an OK companion...Willa adores him! Spike seems a little overwhelmed right now, but he's a pretty spunky ol' guy. I'll post pics of the two of them playing together once I dig out our 'real' camera.

Willa is doing pretty well these days. She's lived two months past the time she was given. She's a happy dog, still playing and bouncing around. There are some noticeable differences in her behavior - mostly due to the meds and the heat (gotta love summer in Georgia) - but Willa is still tearing up her Monkey dolls and spazzing out whenever the word 'cookie' is mentioned...
