Halloween prep…

This is the time of year the hubby and I look forward to with great anticipation. Not because our upcoming wedding anniversary (10/31/05 *hint**wink**nudge*) but for the festivities of the season. Halloween has always been a big holiday for me ~ more so than Christmas. Halloween was a time of year where I could just be me…while pretending to be someone else (?). Christmas was fun, but it involved family dinners, travel, social mores and various other restrictions, er traditions..all things alien and, frankly, abhorent to me as a child. Halloween was a time to let loose, lose myself in a character of my choosing. I remember the fabulous handmade costumes my mother would put together for me. I was the best dressed witch in the third grade when she transformed a dark blue sparkly bridesmaid’s dress into a witchy gown and hat for me (complete with matching ‘booty’ bag for my candy stash!) I haven’t lost my affinity for the season and I most definitely met my match in ‘Cro.

Now on the good stuff ~ this year’s theme is “Masquerade Ball”…

I purchased a lovely black and white ‘Marie Antionette’ style costume from the gal at MovieGowns.com. Aside from the few accessories I will need to pick up the ensemble will arrive complete and ready to don. I’ve never been a ‘blonde, much less a ‘platinum’ blonde, so it should be interesting to see how the wig looks on me. I think I may trade out the include masquerade mask for a gorgeous black and white Venetian mask I spied in an online auction.

‘A Gown Fit for a Queen!’

gleaned from the dressmaker’s description ~

“This beauty is made of black satin and features a gorgeous metallic white and silver brocade in the center skirt panel. The gown is two pieces consisting of the lace up bodice/stomacher and the double layer skirt. A fun feature of this gown can be found under the black satin split skirt layer ~ simply move it up over your second skirt layer and at either hip you will find a small slit on the side seam of the second skirt layer that allows access to the inside of the pocket hoops. The pocket hoops can be utilized in place of a purse to store a cell phone, lipstick etc.!

The bodice is lavishly decorated with hand made trim, consisting of silver scalloped ribbon, black ruched ruffles, white pleated ruffles, and finished off with a Swarovski rhinestone trim at center. A beaded Fleur d’ Les appliqué accents the center of the bodice/stomacher. The elbow length sleeves are made from the same white and silver brocade used on the skirt, decorated with a triple layer ruffle made of black satin and trimmed with the handmade embellishments as used on the bodice. There is a modesty placket at the back of the bodice to cover the lace up. The bodice is boned to give support and proper shape but the flexible boning allows you to move freely with little restriction.

Also included with the gown are a matching choker, platinum wig, feather bow hairpin, pocket hoops and masquerade mask.”

As for my second costume ~ it is a pretty Victorian gown I purchased from Batty of AzacDesigns. It’s a heavy velvet and brocade number with a sweeping train and bustle. Currently the gown is adorned in pink roses with pink trim, but I believe I am going to find something more ‘me’ (red) to attach to the dress. I have a pretty pink Venetian mask on order ~ which may influence me to keep the pink on the dress.

Yes, pink. It’s a sickness…and my not-so-secret shame ;-p
