For the love of gadgets…

I am now the happy owner of a Sidekick II. After looking at several plans offered by T-mobile I’ve decided to go with a ‘pay-as-you-go’ plan as I am not sure how many minutes I will actually use a month. The $100 card allows for 1000 minutes with a 365-day expiration period. Best of all ~ *no contract*. The Sidekick service is an additional $1.00 per day for unlimited email, text, IM & web browsing (or so that is how the sales person explained it to me.) Chances are I’ll be using the non-voice features a lot more often than the voice service, so I do believe the ‘pay-as-you-go’ service will be the most cost effective for my particular habits. The Sidekick II has several cool features my company Nextel phone (read: mandatory electronic leash) does not, such as:

  • Real web browsing
  • Built-in camera with flash
  • Built-in organizer with PC synchronization
  • Photo caller ID
  • AOL Instant Messenger, text messaging, 6 MB email account
  • If this phone works the way I hope it does my PDA (Dell Axim X30) will be next to useless for me, as will my smaller digital camera (Minolta Dimage G400). I wanted the PDA mainly for mobile Internet access, and to carry my Outlook calendar, contacts and ‘to-do’ between the office and home. As for the small camera, it takes much better pictures (4 mega pixels) than the Sidekick is capable of, but if quality of image, rather than convenience, becomes an issue we have a digital Canon Rebel at home. These items might find their way on to eBay…but I have such a hard time giving up my gadgets ;-p

After the shopping buzz wore off I thought about how the Hubby would probably react to the expense…so he will shortly be the happy owner of an iPod (thanks Bradley =) ‘Cro has talked about getting an iPod for a while, but we haven’t come across a good deal until today. I know giving him this gadget is going to open the floodgates for numerous accessory purchases *shakes head* I know my boy, and toys make him happy.

We got a really sweet deal for both items as we’re purchasing them ‘gently used’ (the Sidekick II is only a couple of weeks out of the box) from friends of ours. Speaking of sweet deals ~ we scored a whole home gym worth of work out gear from a charity auction. Our boss auctioned off the company workout equipment to make room for more client vaults. Our winnings include a dumbbell rack complete with dumbbelss, a plate rack with steel and cement plates, bars, two benches (one multi station, one upright) and a Nordic Track Cross Country. The proceeds of the auction go to help a co-worker who is currently battling a serious illness.

Now if I can only come across an equally sweet deal on Jeep accessories…
